«Basel gyygt»

Since 2016, «Basel gyygt» has been bringing music and new perspectives into the lives of children who would otherwise have little access to instrumental lessons. Inspired by New York's FiddleFest and supported by the Evangelische Stadtmission Basel, the programme offers children from socially disadvantaged families free group lessons in violin, viola, cello or double bass – including loan instruments.

At seven locations in neighbourhoods with a high proportion of migrants (Klybeck, Kleinhüningen, Herzl, Wasgenring, Gundeli, Volta and Clara), children learn in small groups not only about sounds and melodies, but also how to listen to each other, make music together and take pride in their achievements. The joy of successfully performing a piece of music boosts creativity, self-confidence and social skills.

After just one semester, the children perform in concerts. Since 2019, a children's string orchestra has complemented the programme. Highly qualified teachers accompany the young musicians with patience, enthusiasm and the conviction that music opens doors and makes cultural participation possible for everyone.

Since 2023, the Basel Chamber Orchestra has been a partner in this valuable commitment. With concert and musical theatre projects, participatory formats and performance opportunities – such as the concert prelude at the Stadtcasino Basel – it supports the «Basel gyygt» children's orchestra and develops new projects together with it.
